故宫分外朝内廷。外朝的最南端，前面是太和门。门前有一对青铜狮子，威严、凶悍，成了门前桥头的守卫者，象征着权力与尊严。皇帝贵为天子，门前的狮子自然最精美、最高大了。东边立的为雄狮，前爪踏着一圆球，象征四海统一，江山永固；古边的为雌狮，前爪下有一只幼狮，象征皇权永存，千秋万代。
